I replied to a scammer once that I knew what he was up to. He said for me to be careful because he knew where I was but that I had no idea where he was from then on I just hung up.

I got a call last week that I picked up without looking at the number.
I said hello, no reply, I said hello again a little louder and a woman came on and replied 'hello, I'm sorry, I was just having a little argument with my husband' tinkling laugh...I'm Lisa and I'm calling you today because you recently stayed at one of our resorts...
I break in and say, 'I'm sorry you have the wrong num... then she continues talking and I realize it's a recording.
Lies! Lies! it's all lies! I shout into the phone before hanging up. Haha.

Lisa didn't hear me I guess because just this week we had a repeat performance. I answer Hello? ...and so on.
That time I just set the phone on the counter and let her carry on. I'm sure I'm not rid of her, but I bet her husband is getting tired of arguing with her.

I think that would have counted as a "threatening" phone call. Surely, that would lift it up in the ranks for the FCC.

Checking a "who called" online may not help. There seems to be dozens of those online services! Generally, anyone can input info. How does one know that the webpage isn't part of the scam? A "helpful comment" identifying a phone number as legitimate may be made by anyone and just that morning. If you use one of those reverse lookups, it may help if the dates of the responses are listed, I don't know, tho!

Scammers are using other peoples's phone numbers on the caller id. The guy from India was calling with a women's name-a famous philanthropist with a college named after her. I got a cll once from MY number. Computers are calling now-more than a recording-it can answer your questions. But there is a hesitation before they answer at it is pretty easy to confuse them. The first call I got like this I asked if they were a real person. It sounded human but there was announcers quality about her voice. She laughed and said she was a real person and asked, "Don't I sound like a real person.? The fastest way to get them off the line is to ask where they re calling from-they will hang up.

A scam going on around here is for them to get you to answer "yes" to a question from them, like "can you hear me ok?" Your "Yes" is recorded, and they use it to sign you up for God knows what. Their proof that you agreed is your recorded "yes."
@catjac 1975, that "don't I sound like a real person?" might have been one of those scams.

I work in customer service for a benefits company & over the weekends we have a callbox for voicemails from our members to leave questions for callbacks when we are back in the office on Mondays. For the longest time we would get about a dozen/day of these recorded spam calls coming from different phone # but the same messages. Our iT dept finally figured out a solution to stop them & knew they were coming from overseas.

I just wish most dr offices and hospitals would quit outsourcing their billing offices overseas. It's much easier when they can deviate from a script & understand what they're being asked, but that doesn't always happen.

That isn't a new scam for email.

It may be age-related.

Yeah, might be a decade or so before the time when "the women fight over the men at the senior center."
