I was about 7 when my grandfather gave me my 1st pocket knife. It was a dull fake mother of pearl, but made me feel grownup. For my 16 birthday he gave me a swiss army knife which I still have. Seedcorn sent me a pocket knife, which I carry at work. Can't believe day in day out how many times it been usefull. From opening mail to dog food bags. Do you have a knife that's special to you?

This is funny because I just came in the house for a carrot for the gopher trap and was thinking I should use a pocket knife to shave little pieces off. ( I don't know why I thought shaved pieces would work better than a chunk...?)
Anyway then I thought of what would work to shave a carrot...oh! I know my pocket knife!
I never used to carry a pocket knife in a pocket, those in my glovebox don't count, until Kid#1 gave me one for my birthday. He's like his dad that way, gives me stuff he wants, haha. It's special because it's a gift from my kid, but it's also a really good knife. It's a Spyderco Dragonfly and it's yellow. Kid#1 told me how awesome the blade is because of how it's forged, but it had me at yellow. :p

I don't actually wander around with it in my pocket, just at work, and like now when I want to use it for a specific purpose. I still am a girl you know.;)

A southern gentleman should always carry a sharp pocket knife and a clean handkerchief. You never know when a lady may have a need for either. I'll admit I don't carry a handkerchief around with me at home, I could never keep it clean enough as much as I sweat when out working, but in public I generally do. The only time I don't have a pocket knife is when I'm going to a building, usually a government building, or an airport. Is it always sharp? No it is sometimes used. But it usually isn't long before I resharpen it using a whetstone.

Mine is a Case, by the way. The reason I chose this specific one is that the force to open it isn't enough to break a fingernail. I don't like a knife that is too hard to open.

@Ridgerunner I had a Case that looked like yours, it was from 1980. I gave it to my son some years back because he loves old knives. Now I carry a small Buck knife that if I lose it, I don't care.

I carry couple dozen in truck with me. Unless walking fields, don't carry it on me. They are useful to open things with but I use mine mainly to dig up seed. Do much less damage with knife than other tools. Plus it has measurements on it so I know how deep.

I remember I used to watch my grandfather sharpen knives on a electrical wheel, loved the sparks it made.
Great, easy, cheap way to sharpen knives is to hone it on cement block. Sharpens but doesn't eat the steel. Plus if you sharpen too much on wheel, it kills the steel making it wear away much faster. A knife taken care of will last couple life times.
