Dog Gone

Great name for a wolf @Smart Red . @bobm mine was afraid of thunder, gunshots, fireworks and no matter which side of a door he was on he decided he needed to be on the other side of it if there was loud noise. That is to say he was very rough on doors, being adept at making his own do-it-yourself dog doors. Otherwise he was very good indoors. I can imagine what the interior of your friend's place might have looked like.

I know there are lots of great stories, and horror stories about purebred dogs, as well as about mutts. It's a crap shoot, either way. No guarantees the dog will be all I want. I think I will call the veterinary clinics in the area, as well as keep in touch with the Humane Society. Sometimes there are notices from dog owners who need to rehome their pet.

So lucky why don't you put a wanted ad on CL it is free. Put size of dog you want and house broken. I see them all the time where I am (almost every time for toy dog)

I read there was a national group of truckers that will bring a shelter dog across country for some really small fee if you should find one online not in your state. However, it might be difficult returning the dog if it didn't work out. There are rescue groups for specific dog breeds, and some devoted to placing senior dogs.

Sadly, a lot of folks use the cemetery behind our place to dump unwanted animals. Several of ours came from there. I don't know if @Nyboy has had this experience, but area visitors will drop off highway strays at our local dog groomer saying they will pick them up to take them home and never do. I got another dog that way. And the country kennel I one used took down their sign because of that, too. So these professionals might be able to link you up with a good dog.

Luckily I don't get dumps to often, last was a 2 year old lab. Owner lost both home and job at same time, once he agreed to give up dog I found great home quickly. What I do get from time to time is owner passing away without making plans for their dog.

@Nyboy, I'm just curious. Do you think a dog needs to be able to see (and say goodbye to) his deceased owner?
I ask because I read about this in a book that dealt with animal behavior, and the idea that a pet, particularly a dog, needs to be able to see that their human is gone for ever, and this might help them with going forward, is very eye-opening to me.
Just wondered what your thoughts are on this.

We have always let our pets say goodbye. They have sniffed their friend and seemed to understand. Good point on letting pets say goodbye to their humans.
