Giardia is something you wouldn't want. nasty bug you can get just from drinking water out of a stream (if you are a hiker you need to know about that). or your dog/cat could pick it up on their feet and while cleaning themselves ingest it to become infected. it's part of the reason you're told to pick up your dog's poo if they leave it in someone else's yard is so other animals don't get it and pass it around. you want to pick up any in your own yard too! many dogs that are sold in pet shops have this problem because they can come from puppy mills that were unsanitary. happened to my sister when they got their cocker spaniel many years ago. also can take a long time to fully get rid of it and pet stores may not pay up for medical costs if they sold a sick animal. or they only pay for 2 weeks and the rest is up to the new owner to pay. this nasty bug can also be passed from human to human.

btw, diseases that can be transmitted to humans is called Zoonosis. http://www.cdc.gov/24-7/CDCFastFacts/zoonotic.html

... can't hunt, can't target practice, can't burn dog poo, can't save rain water, can't have roosters.....

I'm AM SOO GLAD that I live in the 'backwoods' of VA.
'Bout the only thing I've come across that I can't do (other than the normal illegal stuff) is bury livestock.
And if anyone asks... those 2 big logs laying in my pastures are purely for decoration.....
That is exactly why we moved to the country as well.

Interesting info on composting dog poo. . I have an abundance of it (I breed large Italian mastiffs). I have a pile on the edge of the woods, opposite side of the yard from my compost heap. The only thing I do to it is cover it with lyme a couple of times a year to help it break down faster so I don't have a fly problem.

Can someone explain the rule about not catching rain water?
I think it's because they want it all to go into the water table. :idunno

Although it seems logical to me that if you capture it and water your garden with it it is going to end up in the water cycle anyway.
Who can figure out how people who come up with this stuff think.

I think those laws about not catching rain water are one of the results of the law that states no person with an IQ over 88 shall be a lawmaker.

what it boils down too is the cdc and local officials are worried about mosquitoes and the spread of the west Nile disease.
that people who do catch rain water do not have a screen on their barrels or put a layer of mineral oil in their barrels.

at work we have a yard full of earth moving tires being staged for retreading or repair and we do get the rain, we have to throw rock salt in everyone of the them to kill mosquitoes...

by the way composting dog poop is a great way to raise worms for fishing.......
