My local supermarket is starting to carry unusual fruit and vegetables. My last trip they had dragon fruit, I had never seen that before. Was pricey at $5.99 a pound, how do you eat it? Is it peeled? Is it sweet?

As a teacher, I used to purchase those strange to the mid-west foods when I spotted them at the market and we would do a class taste test. I think the last one we tried was UGLI fruit. I've seen the dragon fruit lately, but not while I was still in the classroom so I don't have a clue how it tastes. Interested in finding out though.

Greetings, The fruit should be slightly soft. Cut it in half, scoop out the white center in one piece from each side, cut off the inner skin from the white, the black are the seeds, you know that, now cut up the white centers into small cubes and put them back into the outer skins and eat them with a fork. You can toss them up and catch them in you mouth like popcorn if you like.

The flavor is ok, Dragonfruit is from a kind of cactus, like prickly pear and has a similar flavor, (kind of watermelon-y) . The problem is that it also has pricky pear fruit's texture, which is sort of mucilaginous (slimy).

There is presumably some way to remove the slimyness, as their is with okra. Some years ago (at least five probably less than ten) Bolthouse (the people who make those bottled heath juices and smoothies you find in a cold case at your supermarket), made a prickly pear lemonade, and while it did have it's problems (after the novelty wore off I began to realize how cloying and strong it was, to the point where I had to cut it to drink it*) it was definitely not slimy.

*usually with some Fever Tree ginger ale (that really mild one they sell for fancy cocktail mixers)

Thank you, Pulsegleaner. I'm not sure which I would prefer to eat -- slimy or mucilaginous.

Yes. It didn't have that minty smell that white paste did. I never tasted it so I don't know if it had a better flavor than that minty white paste or not. :confused:
