To its credit, it was neater than that awful white paste. I was the first primary teacher to ban paste from my classroom. Sure was a great day when glue sticks arrived!

Back to the thread. . . I suppose now I will have to give it a try the next time I spot it in the store.

Hard to say. I don't actually even like the TASTE of mango, so I don't eat them. by "slimy". I meant like a slug or okra sap, a substance that actually makes little ropes when you pull it apart.

Though if you are looking for recommendations, I'm not sure I'm the person who is best to ask, since there are a LOT of exotic fruits people love I hate. Don't like passionfruit, don't like guava (regular or pineapple). Oddly, given I do like lichis and rambutan.

Other's I am fond of include Jackfruit (preferably the orange kind, it's stronger than the yellow kind). some figs, especially the striped kind called "tiger figs", several fruits in the cherimoya-custard apple soursop family (a few years ago in Chinatown I actually found a weird example that was a sweet and soursop, liked it so much I saved the pits) Ugli fruit (if it has an orange rind, the yellowy greeny ones tend to taste too grapefruity) SOME kinds of tangerine/mandarin, most notably the Dekapn (a.k.a. the Sumo Mandarin) and the true original mikan (that super super tiny mandarin that they use to make those canned mandarin orange slices. Fresh it's a lot tastier.)

Actually, given where you are, you might want to head down to Central Avenue and Visit H-Mart there. There fruit section is INCREDIBLE. When they first opened they had fruits I had literally never seen or tasted before, like canistels and black sapotes (didn't like either, but still)

Other places around of note would include Kam Sen (the Chinese grocery on Barker across from Aberdeen, in the building with the DMV) Golden Village (usually doesn't have anything H-mart doesn't have cheaper, but once in a blue moon, they get in an alternate version of lian wu (rose apple) which is thinner redder and a bit more intensely flavored (though it still tastes a lot like very watered down strawberry juice.)

Finally there is Mrs. Greens. Most of their fruit is pretty conventional, but since they do source from Buck Brands citrus, in it's season, they do get in mango oranges, which everyone should try once. They are really odd things, with pink pith and filaments (like a cara-cara) and a very odd flavor (like the Palestinian sweet lime, they have had all of the acid bred out of them, so they have a flat almost cloying sweetness with a slight raspberry touch.) Also, because they source from smaller growers, during the season of blood oranges, they are slightly more likely to have ones that are the older darker stronger Moro type than the merely blushed Tangiers that is now industry standard.

YIKES, so many exotic fruits I have never tried. How boring I am staying with what I know. The star fruit, mango, passion fruit and papaya I disliked. Kiwi is good. But then I do not like any melons! Sticking with apples, grapefruit, grapes, cherries, pears, plums, peaches, nectarines and bananas! LOL

Sticker shock used to be reserved for big items like cars. Now it is a weekly event at the grocery store. If this keeps up I may have to start raising my own meat and canning squirrel. Anyone have good recipes for road-kill? There is a lot of that around here every morning.
