as for me drying basil is very simple
just merely hang it in bundles
also turn it twice a day until completely dry
also I heard about special basil-drying screen.. but not sure how it works

Why not just grow it indoors during the winter (for those of you that have winter)..? Seems like it would be just as happy -- particularly if it gets some light while you're awake -- perhaps a small grow bulb would be sufficient.. At least with it indoors it's less likely to have the dog use it for -- uhh.. a bathroom.. ;)
I grow 2 basil plants inside, they're BFF's  I have them in a small terra cotta pot with a paper bowl on the bottom to collect the extra water (Still haven't invested in a proper saucer!) I chose both of them when they were little seedlings from the garden so I could have it through the winter, one seedling was from seeds from an organic New Hampshire grower, the other commercial seed packet. I also have a small hens & chicks in with them. I just sowed some parsley seeds in there, too. To water them, I use a spray bottle every or every other day to keep it moist. They're weaker than the ones in the garden, but it fills the house with the smell of fresh basil!!!
