This winter I have had to suffer through problems with winter horse watering, which I have this winter just over the training area fencing bc my heated horse will reach.
I always take out and put on it's side OR upside down my 100 gallon steel horse water tank.
If not, ice can crack it, and that's happened to me twice in 40 years. Just Don't want to buy another one!

I Thought that they were both leaky, then I thought that they were not,
meanwhile I have been using a 30 gallon hard plastic small waterer during the winter.
It's easy to tip over to remove ice, and, after a decade mine cracked.
DD thought to use one of the Rubbermaid tanks, but it really Was cracked, right below the drainage hole.
The other one isn't cracked but I had a hard time threading the stopper. So, She filled up the first one and it rapidly emptied out. I Filled up the other one and discovered it had also emptied out.
They are both right now upside down on the east side of the fencing for the training area, and will BOTH be used for gardening this summer.
FORTUNATELY, I know the dirty little secret: Our meter reader isn't reading our water meters this winter, so every month I have paid an estimate which is about 1/2 of my normal bill.
I have also been washing a LOT of clothes, etc, and taking advantage of this.
I bit the bullet and bought a new 30 gallon waterer. I mean, REALLY, if something lasts a decade, I can't be that upset about it.
Yesterday, I Finally did a little bit of planting. One of my seed orders came with a freebie, 3 onion sets, one red, one white, and one yellow. I planted them in an old horse rubber water bucket and surrounded them all with a rusty canning screw wide mouth lid.
HOPEFULLY, when I got out to feed ponies in a few minutes, I will be able to report back on some more planting!
Really, for a person who is 1/2 crippled (until July--hooray!!! ) I am doing Pretty good this year!!

I have had stock tanks that have leaked after many years of use. I used what is called ‘wet epoxy putty’ to weld the leak closed. It has also worked on the pump pipes that are under pressure to stop leaks. Maybe you can repurpose those older stock tanks to somethin else. A small pond for water hardy water lilies. I don’t know just throwing out ideas… Sorry …my mind wanders.
So happy your knee recovery is doing so well. Soon you’ll be dancing in you gardens.

Thanks! That's what I usually do.
I have used a leaky water tank for raising chicks before and every container gets a chance to raise plants.
I have owned several TW's. DH's favorite horse was a TW/QH cross who rode every bit a TW:
walk, running walk, lope, pace, trot AND "broken washing machine."
