i found that all i had to do to teach my corgi to help dig a hole was to start one and tell him to 'dig' and he would try to finish it for me! now, trying to get the plant to stay in the hole once i put it in there was a different matter to the dog! i have to get him to back off for a few days when we walk near newly planted plants! for him, it's the smell of freshly moved dirt that gets him curious.

Haha! My corgi loves to dig, too! He loves tunneling after gophers and other subterranean critters. When he was a pup he used to mess with my newly planted shrubs, etc, but nothing like that other dog we had. Gus learned pretty quickly that you don't pull up and play with mommy's plants, though he still likes to "help" any time I'm doing any yard work at all.

I hadn't even planted the trees yet! I had them propped against my car while I took my 3 year old in the house and got her settled for a nap. He just loves sticks.
Anyway I am feeling quite optimistic after seeing the roots on the other trees I bought. He didn't do nearly as much damage as I thought he had. The fig was the worst but after 36 hours in a bucket of damp sand it had already started to grow some new roots. I got them all planted this morning (after soaking and trimming some ragged roots and a little rooting hormone) so now I will just wait and see. Thank you all for your help and advice, these are my first fruit trees and I wanted to get them off to a good start. :love
