Is there any way to sex a dormant mulberry tree? Big box just got in 5 foot weeeping mulberry for $80 , I know they come in male and female, I want berries. The trees are dormmant now, any way to tell which are female? I also read somewhere they can change sex, anyone know how to make them switch?

What I understand is that the female trees make a more round flower, and the male trees make a longer catkin type pendant flower.

It says you really can't tell for sure until they do flower. I don't know, but you might get a maybe by looking at the buds. Maybe the more rounded budded ones might have the female flowers in them.

Looks like to be sure you have to wait until they flower.

Super cool info.

In My trees and shrubs class I came to not really like the Mulberry. Really messy. But maybe I should revisit this tree I wrote off 15 years ago...

April they are great trees, can be messy like any fruit tree. Named varities have better berries then wild, some poeple think better then cherries. And their leaves are good rabbit food. Read that you don't see the berry at market because they don't travel well.

More Mulberry trees should be planted. There should be recipes for Mulberries. I bet they could be the basis of things like Mulberry Milkshakes, Mulberry Ice Cream, Mulberry Pies, heck, Little Debbie should get on the Mulberry bandwagon!

Just make sure you get the WHITE mulberry, not the purple. Birds eat the mulberries and bomb everything with purple poo bombs. At least the white mulberries don't stain everything!

That is one of the main reasons people hate to have a mulberry tree anywhere near. Even if it's across the yard, they will still get your vehicles messy. And their leaves create such dense shade, grass (or anything else) has a difficult time growing under it. But they look cool when they get old and multi-limbed, down low.
