Well, for one thing, that the federal minimum wage was higher than it is now, in 2013 $, from about 1955 until 1998.
There have been BIG jumps in the wage, in 1950 and the late 50's. That 8 years ago, it was at the lowest level in 60 years, post-WW2 reconstruction years. That there were no increases for nearly 10 year stretches in the 1980's and after 1998 ...
@Nyboy my first job, not working for the neighbors , was for 1.65/hr. I was proud that it wasn't at minimum wage .
Wikipedia says that the first proposed minimum wage was only to apply to women and children. Couldn't get it enacted. There was this question of constitutional power to do so prior to 1938.
In high school, I participated in the COE program my senior year. Where you go to school half a day, work half a day. I worked at a clothing store, and got paid $1.00 an hour. Most of my friends were getting $0.50 an hour.
Ah, the good old days....
