I think it is more by personality than by breed especially since mine are all mixed breeds. Some breeds have personality tendencies so maybe breed factors in that way. Sometimes looking at them I think color might play a part, but other times it sure doesn't look that way. Then pullets raised together often hang together even when they are with the main flock, long after they have been accepted.

I was going to say what Ridge did, in my flock it seems the batch that grew up together, hang together, no matter the breed.

It is definitely interesting ...flock watching. To see how they deal with things that come up. Right now, my middle kids....4.5 months old....are slowly but surely getting up on the teenagers high roost at night. There were 4 of the 7 kids there last night. They want the roost!!

You DO KNOW that the eggs come out of those hens with a hard shell, don't you?!? I never knew this until I starting butchering chickens.

My new rolling nest box seems to be working! The only problem is that someone is sleeping and pooping in it. Most of the time the egg is at the other end from the poop. But I don't like having to clean the drawer box each day.

I have the same problem with a hen insisting on sleeping in the nest box. I go out after dark and push her out and stuff netting in to keep her out. In the morning I go out and pull the netting out. Such a pain!

A couple of my new girls are laying regularly, so I am happy about that. They are all hanging around together for the most part now. The two new barred rocks are roosting on the high roost with the old girls, while the little blonde sex link is roosting with the two Sussex on the lower roost. Most hostility is gone. Yea!
I spent a good part of the day fencing off the lower deck level, where the chickens have started hanging out a lot, pooping and making a mess. I just used chicken wire and some various fencing we had on hand. Now they act like they are really insulted.
