Egg Eating

Mine were for decoration. One is blue and one is yellow. The chickens don't seem to mind. :D

I have some of the cheap-o plastic Easter eggs in the nest boxes. I filled them with dirt (to make them heavy) and taped them closed. They are pink, purple, yellow, green & blue with a black stripe of electrical tape. I like to think that they are inspired by the colorful eggs.

Cane, I have some of those plastic Easter eggs! I was afraid the colorful Easter eggs would attract the chickens to peck them. I think I'll work on solving this problem this weekend before I resort to those eggs.

Thistle, I've seen those eggs at the feed store also that is 2 hrs away :(

i have filled an egg with mustard and another with dish soap. They seemed to eat both. They did seem to stop eating them as badly after that.I have read to put golf balls into the nest. They will peck to eat them and then give up. I haven't tried that yet. I check the coup a few times a day to collect them as soon as possible.Right now though, they are all on strike.

Mary, I like the idea behind those pictures of plastic nestboxes that Cane posted.

If you decide on something for your husband to build (not roll out), here is a link to The National Sustainable Agriculture Service with information on "community" and "tunnel" nestboxes at the very bottom of the page: (link). Click the View Now.

I also have an image from an ancient University of North Dakota (i believe) publication: (link).

EDIT: I will include this link too but your DH may not appreciate the work involved for building a "roll-away" nest box, community or otherwise. BTW, the size & number of hens make much more sense to me than the other information.

Steve, I'm trying to avoid giving my husband another project. ;) Even though I think it wouldn't be too much work to build those roll out boxes. My boxes are on the outside and I think he would only need to add new sides and bottom to slant down. I have a computer question for you, when I click on the first link it ask's me if I want to download or is it upload the software. I
don't know if I should say "yes". I'm always afraid of messing up our computer.

Red, since we never have winter here, we don't have over-winter time/projects. Ha

Mary, the service sells their booklets but,

The pdf download is free. If you have the free (again) adobe acrobat reader, you can read the pdf file.

I get tired of the many updates adobe has for the reader but those pdf files are so common, feel I have to have it.
