It looks like we might be seeing an el nino occur in the coming months. El nino is above normal temperatures, it would be nice to have a warmer than usual fall season up ahead, have more time and more vegetables to plant for fall :) .
For areas like Texas and other areas will see much needed rainfall which is good news for them.

What do you guys think about this?

I want to say, "What, AGAIN??!!" But you make it sound so rosy.

Last time El Nino was news I wasn't a gardener. This time, I think I love your outlook and I will look forward to keeping the brassicas and saladings going even longer.

Bienvenido, El Nino!

Dont ask. :(

I moved to get away from the heat and what do I get? The same heat plus no air conditioning! My summer garden is wilting away as well as my yard, my ornimentals, me and my St. Bernards. At this point I don't care about my fall garden. I wasn't really counting on one anyway.

I just hope my orchard can survive the heat and no rain...I've got a lot invested in those trees.

El Nino is a global phenomenon where there is a change in oscillation in southern ocean waters. This often bring wetter than normal conditions in places like Southern Cali and drought in the Asian Rain forest. It generally occurs in cycles of around 8-11 years but has been increasing to about 5-6 years. I think I can be good in some places but really really bad in other places. Mostly it is good to remember that it is a temporary shift in weather patterns. That is about all I remember from my meteorology classes.

As for me, when I lived in Southern Cali El Nino meant that it was a wet winter. Especially cause rain just doesn't happen all that often. So I don't know if we could be seeing the effects so soon.

The el nino also affects hurricanes forming in the atlantic and pacific oceans, i think we might see less hurricanes this year than last year because of El Nino, it really depends where the el nino is forming. I enjoy watching the weather channel, especially this time of the year where they track down any tropical storms or hurricanes. I hope they will talk about el nino soon, wonder why they havent discussed that yet.
Keeping fingers crossed for el nino.

We shall see for the 2009 season.

Yeah . . . while it is good news for some, it is not so good for others. In the Pacific Northwest it is going to be a long dry stretch and cause us headaches as we get into next growing season, as there will most likely be water shortages (no winter snow pack = no drinking water reserves). But to be fair . . . I guess we can let our typical rain allotment go to those who typically suffer longer periods with drought problems. But WE WANT THAT RAIN BACK before too long! :p
