I watched that episode and found it very interesting. One of our members on here was talking about what to grow in a greenhouse in the winter. No tomatoes or cukes, but lots of greens. The four Seasons Farm guy said for each layer of plastic you have over the plants, it raises the environment to be one and a half zones warmer. And two layers of plastic only reduced the light 20%. So if you are in a zone 6, two layers would make it grow like in a zone 9. Hmmm.
I have an east side of the house flower bed that always gets out of hand in the summer with reseeded annual flowers. Quite messy. But it is protected from the west wind, and gets good morning sun. I'm thinking how I could turn that into a cold frame for the winter. Even if things wouldn't germinate outside now, they would grow if I start them inside under my lights. Great, now my brain is going to be stewing about this.
