I really need to rant, I am tired of equiment not being taken care of. I am often told so and so broke we need a new one, when asked how it got broke no one knows. A brand new washing machine lasted less then a year because it was always over loaded. Today one of my guys was cutting the grass. He was cutting grass along street when he decided to take lunch. He left lawn mower by street next to garbge dumpster, when he came back a hour later mower was gone. Hello you left next to dumpster it looked like it was being thrown away!!! Someone got a nice Honda mower for free, I cannot blame them. I blame guy for leaving at street. The rest of summer and fall he can now sweat his b$lls off using a weed wacker :barnie:duc:he

I so feel your pain. We had a furniture store and buying tools was just an ongoing expense. We went to the tool sales that came to town and bought a half dozen of what ever tools we were buying, because we knew one wouldn't last long before it was lost.

We bought a Mikita cordless drill for the guys to put furniture together in homes when they delivered. They left the drill in the back of the truck, back door rolled up, in a not so nice neighborhood. Naturally it was gone when they went back to the truck. My husband made them use screwdrivers for a couple of months and put everything together by hand. When we finally got them another drill, they treated it like gold.

Why don't you hire a lawn service? It is easier to fire a service provider than it is to fire an employee, and you don't have to pay unemployment. Plus they bring their own equipment. ;)

Well, did you hire them for lawn and grounds keeping or for grooming dogs? If you expect employees to keep the grounds, them maybe you need to designate one or hire one to keep everything spiffed up. If they are sitting around, then give them a chore that does not include using your equipment irresponsibly. Put a broom in their hands or a mop. Scrub the toilet or clean the walls.

Maybe you only need one and hire a lawn service. I would have to get seriously angry, in a quiet, controlled manner with the one who left the mower at the dumpster for it to get stolen. We had a series of write ups for mishaps of that nature. 3 write ups and they were fired. It was also proof on paper of their misconduct the got me off the hook for paying their unemployment. I just had a problem about firing someone for being a screw up and paying them to take a long vacation due to unemployment. If you don't have disciplinary write-ups, then you need to get them. It does not make you the bad guy, it just sets it straight that stupidity at your expense is not tolerated. 3 strikes and they are gone.

Nyboy, your lawn mower theft sounds like it could have been a planned deal. That act borders on moron level. He may think you are such an easy mark, his friend can steal stuff while you're inside, and you won't do anything about it. If I were in your situation, I would keep an eye on that guy.
