@Nyboy sounds like we have to deal with the type of employees...
production ,production. wait till it breaks then say something..... < oh yes the backup is broken too> so a 20.00 fix is now a 500.00 replacement.. and a lead time of 2 weeks to get it....grrrrrrr

will agree with @so lucky about the mower....... when you do replace it buy a murry mower cheap but dependable...
you need to lay down the law..it's your bread and butter on the line. and their employment .....

as for washing machines.. we have talked about this before........................................................................................

lucky I never thought of that. He is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I once fired someone over cans of soda. I keep the fridge full of Snapple and coke, everyone helps themselves, no one is keeping track. End of day I walked into guy stuffing cans down his sweatshirt. I fired him on the spot my feeling if you steal one thing you will steal other things. Sad thing was if he would have said I don't feel like stopping on way home can I have some soda, I would have told him help yourself

Nyboy, your lawn mower theft sounds like it could have been a planned deal. That act borders on moron level. He may think you are such an easy mark, his friend can steal stuff while you're inside, and you won't do anything about it. If I were in your situation, I would keep an eye on that guy.
Wow you think diabolically. I would never Have thought of that. But my Mom worked for and oil company with a chain of gas stations. IIt was always and inside job. Including the tied up crying guy.

Thief is a thief. Only amount varies.
Agreed. Middle daughter has stolen this & that from both of us and her sisters. When caught she has returned things, but when I misplaced my favorite watch right before she visited on the 4th, I figured that she took it. You put away what is pretty and valuable, just in case, and assume items will grow feet. She even told me during the visit that she has stolen my ring holder (off of my dresser.) What do you say?!? I said I didn't need it. This is a victim attitude, that you don't need it, have multiples, won't miss it, or are so wealthy that you can afford to replace it.
She and her DH make more than the two of us do and always try to visit friends and family when they are traveling and don't want to pay for a hotel.
It is a general lack of respect for private property and no respect that you may have pinched pennies to purchase that item.
Everybody thinks that bc #8, "You shall not steal," of The The Commandments is less important bc it is low on the list.
The same attitude is given to #9, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor," and it means intentional slander, not simple lies.
#10, "You shall not covet" goes hand in hand with #8.
I like the idea of hiring a lawn service. Along the same lines, you could offer higher wages to people who bring their own power tools.
