As long as I made enough to keep the bills paid, the rest wouldn't matter. If I'm self sufficient, then the income would equal the outgo.

I remind myself almost daily that the purpose of what I do on weekdays is to make possible what I do on weekends. 
I dragged my DH into it, hobby farm in his eyes, full time farm in mine. I'm hoping one day that the sheep will go well enough to pay for all our needs even with being taxed on them. Once it does, then I'll feel like a real farmer. DH hates it, he's the type who likes to visit the zoo once and pet all the animals, then never really deal with them ever again, lol.
But it is very true that someone needs an outside job. All the big corps are stealing all the business. Somehow making things 'organic' or 'pasture raised' and then selling it for a fraction of what we true organic and pasture raisers can even afford to sell it for!
Most people still feel this way, "why get it from a local for 3x the price, when I can go to the store, pick up several other things I need and the fancy green stuff for next to nothing?"
DH seems to like to work and like to complain about it, but once he has time off, he just wants to go back. Would be neat to live in an area of hobby farmers where some worked outside the farm and others grew and raised their own. Then each farm had cash for things like house bills, but could trade goods they each grew and not have to buy them. Unfortunately, seems like most of these groups are very religious or some even cult-like. Not something I want to be near.

I told my daughter, when she was growing up, you have 3 choices.
1. Get a job you hate, but make lots of money at. Then on your time off, you can afford to do the things you like.
2. Get a job you love, probably won't make much money at. Then you scrimp and save to take a vacation once a year.
3. Get a job you love and make lots of money at. Best of both worlds, hard to make it happen. Congratulations if you can make it work.
She must have listened. She is a college professor at a junior college. She makes decent money, (not in the upper levels of professors) loves her job, has LOTS of time off. She further steered her husband into becoming a teacher. He makes decent money, (works at private school-just below public school pay) loves his job, has LOTS of time off. So together, they make good money, they both love their job and have lots of time off to not only live their life, but enjoy doing so. They value their time off as a family more than making gazillions of dollars, so they have a comfortable life, they are happy and it works for them.

Congress passed laws such as for trading goods or bartering is income based on selling price one could receive if the item is sold at fair market price and is subject to income taxation ! Also, to better compete with the big boys, write a BUSINESS PLAN and follow it. Specialize in only ONE thing only. One should buy only high QUALITY , high PRODUCING breeding animals such as sheep, goats, beef, dairy , chickens, ducks, etc. and remember that the herd sire is ONE HALF OF THE HERD . These may cost you more in the begining, but end up being a much better bargain than the alternative bargain animals. CULL the breeding stock severely and ruthlessly every year ! Do not invest in any animal that may be "cute " or certain "color" or has "horns " . or just because it is " heritage "," dual purpose", " endangered ", etc. that you and just a few others may admire as these will bite you in the posterior by COSTING you $$$ as they will cost more to maintain and receive a lower sales price . Too, in one's desire to become self sufficient, one spreads oneself so thin ( working before sunrise to after sunset like our forefathers did ) that one's time and effort in one's most profitable thing will suffer resulting in burn out.I dragged my DH into it, hobby farm in his eyes, full time farm in mine. Forget the gov't and I only have the sheep, so no idea why you're mentioning spreading too thin. Claiming heritage and rare is mostly a scam by a lot of people these days, just a crap-shoot effort to suck more money out of people. Just like the whole 'green' movement now.
