They do! Just without that tang !

I grow purple ones, too. Dusky will do fine here and they are a little bigger than AppleGreen. And, they are pretty . . . what can I say ?

Another "different" plant is celeriac . . . but, Europeans probably have grown these for centuries. It is great to have that starchy, celery flavor to go in a winter stew or mashed together with potatoes. It has to be one of the homeliest vegetables out there, tho' :p.

Steve

edit: Here's a story on NPR's webpages about, what they call: "The Vegetable World's Ugly Duckling: Celeriac."
Well, thanks a lot , Steve. I can feel the nightmares coming.

They be tellin' the truth, too....that is one ugly hombre.

Sure will....come about September. I'd grow peanuts if they weren't being "big farmed", all around here.

Cool link, Boggy! I am going to try it. I bought 2 pineapples at the store night before last so I'm ready to go.

I had an avacado voluntarily sprout in my compost pile once and potted it, but it didn't make it through the winter.

It's fun to try new things even if they may not pan out. You never know. I was told you couldn't grow a decent canteloupe or watermelon around here, but I've had great results with both.

I want to try the peanuts too, in a pot, just for fun.

I've always loved growing things that are different. While my dad's garden had regular old iceberg lettuce, red radishes, regular yellow corn, plain old broccoli...I had a super fancy lettuce mix with greens from around the world, multi-color corn, purple carrots, purple brussels sprouts, purple potatoes, purple beans....I liked purple as a kid. And varieties that are unusual. I still like unusual varieties. (And purple things too...) so I have about eight different unusual heirloom tomatoes. (Yes, a purple one too!) I'd like to try those Egyptian walking onions someday, those are neat. I'm a sucker for unusual vegetables.

I've tried pineapples but never had a lot of luck with them. I have done many avocado trees, but they never seem to grow past a couple of feet tall and four or five leaves, before they just sort of stop and then die. I keep planting them though.

I recently found out that tea would grow in my climate...I thought that would be really neat. It's just not that easy to find tea plants though!
