vfem,
Have you tried a watermelon variety called 'Bush Sugar Baby' ? the vines stay compact, only about 3 feet spread.
I am gonna hafta try those myself.

As for the watermelon wine, I have not made watermelon wine before. Watermelon wine is supposed to be difficult to make due to spoilage. I have hunted for, found, and bought a special yeast that is supposed to work well with a cooler tempature. I plan on perfecting the technique. I do make a lot of hard apple cider, and strawberry wines. I have found an area that has tons of wild muscadines and when those are ready I am gonna make a bunch of that.

I will let yall know how the watermelon wine venture turns out.

Hey Texan, I found this website... thought you might be interested!

http://www.scwatermelon.com/varieties.asp?varieties

P.s. - This year I am growing sweet crimson watermelon. Its a smaller variety maxing out at 25lbs.... but I thought it would be better then some of the jumbo varieties in my garden. I did see I'd be lucky to get 2 melons per vine though. Which is ok.... I have 4 vines out of 5 flurishing with very little work on my part.
