Anyone planting any flower bulbs this fall? I'm trying to get some bulbs and perennials planted in my garden and I have some property in NC that i would like to start planting there and I should start with flower bulbs first. The grass was just planted a few months ago there so I should be able to plant those flower bulbs ok. I've been waiting quite a long time to be able to start to have a garden there, since there's so much room. I wasn't able to plant anything until the house was finished being built and now that it has, I'll be ready to get digging when I visit there next month. I can't wait to start planting there, I just know its going to look so beautiful. :tools
I'm thinking to start with tulips, lilies, and hyacinths then work my way up, at least there will be some color there come spring.

Nothing says spring like tulips. I love them, but so do the deer here. Everytime I have planted them, they where eaten long before flowering. I gave up on them.

Wow- you are really opening up an entirely new gardening experience! Going from NY to NC is like going from hell to heaven!! I think you can do some of the bulbs and tubers year round, that we have to dig up. Like calla lily, dahlia, etc. Can't wait to hear your progress!

Daffodils are the way to go. I gave up on tulips, too. I've never had anything bother the daffodils. Not quite as colorful as the tulips, but certainly a welcome sight come spring!

I'm planning on including daffodils when i plant those fall bulbs in North Carolina. I was just thinking and wanted to ask everyone for their opinion as to how to plant the daffodils. Should i plant one variety of daffodil in a few clumps or do you think daffodils look better with a few different varieties of daffodils next to each other? I don't know to me its nice to have just one variety of daffodil all together but what do you think? ... should i plant two varieties of daffodils near each other?

Thanks so much!! ;)

I don't see any problem of having two different colors, but I personally think they are more dramatic and colorful when the same colors are clumped together. I don't know what your area looks like, but I made four or five different clumps of the same color, all in the same general area of my front yard but with the clumps put in randomly, not in any geometric pattern.

Mom had a different idea. She liked order better than I do so she put two rows of yellow daffodils off the back porch, creating a walkway. I'll admit, after they naturalized and thickened up, they were very attractive, but I still prefer the natural look.

Thanks for posting Ridgerunner!! ;)

That's how i want to plant my daffodils by naturalizing them. They should multiply over the years so instead of ordering a lot of daffodil bulbs of the same variety, I think I'll just order 10 daffodil bulbs of one variety and 10 of another variety and I'll eventually get a lot of daffodils once they start multiplying. What do you think?? I want to get a swath of all daffodils planted around the tulips and other spring bulbs.

Are you thinking of doing this in a lawn area, or garden area? I love the naturalized look in the early spring. What I don't love is the mess, when you can't mow them down. If they are way out back or something, probably not a big deal. I have never regretted any bulb I planted. There is something so magical about seeing them sprout in the early spring!! Good luck with your planting!
