Fall/Winter Gardens in the south

Obsessed, you are down around New Orleans right? So your fall frost date is middle of November. So shouldn't you be planting way later, or am I missing something?

I am so not sure. This will be my first time gardening here in South Louisiana. Which has definitely been different from gardening in Montana. I still have no concept of the seasons here. Like it is totally getting cold in Montana and here it is freaking hot. I have used that LSU pdf and have tried to go by that for the most part. The lettuces the PDf says from 8/15- 9/30 so I was going to try the first or second week of September.

The ag agent did say that my cover corp goes in at the beginning of October. So I am trying to get what I can out of the time I have left.

Oh I started my broccoli and other cole crops at the beginning of August so that they should be ready to transplant come mid September. I hope that works.

Southern Gardener - do you get to seasons out of your tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants like I have read in the southern gardening books?

The Ag center says you can plant tomatoes in July, but I haven't. I'm new at this so I'm taking baby steps!

Southern Gardener - I did start my tomatoe plants in July from seeds. but my seed starting skill are no not any good. I did have one that made it and it is like maybe 4 inches now. I want to say that it is not going to grow in time but I am unsure of the seasons here. So I don't know. I do know that transplanting nice healthy big tomates in early august is very hard to do with this heat.
