:happy_flower Today is Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, does anyone celebrate it? :happy_flower

I myself am making the famous doughnuts that are eaten on this day. Fat Tuesday is a day everyone eats certain things that will be off limits at the start of Lent its also the last day you could "pig out" before Lent begins, which is the next day called Ash Wednesday. Has anyone decided what your going to give up for lent?, i was thinking of giving up chocolate. It has to be either a food, drink, or habit you like that you want to give up for lent until Easter.

Here's a recipe for the doughnuts that i'm using:

Enjoy!! ;)

hmmm what to give up ..it has to hurt ..even though I am not a Christian the symbolism/traditions are important to both my husband and myself

I am going to ponder a bit more and figure this out ..what to give up for Lent this year

four letter words would be a good one :p but sometimes I dont even notice I say them so how can I give it up?

I WOULD, but the Lord decided to give me a cold, so I'm nursing with toast and weak tea. :(

My mom was raised Catholic, so there have been years that I celebrated Mardi Gras--literally, "Fat Mar's Day (Tuesday)"--then gave up something for Lent. (It always felt good to give up something. **sigh**)

I'll bet that Mardi Gras in New Orleans is especially sweet this year!! Go Saints! and....congratulations to Pierre Thomas, the walk on from the University of Illinois! (Wear that Super Bowl Ring with PRIDE, my man!!!!)

I finally decided to give up chocolate for lent.
Did anyone else decide on something?

Here's a picture of those doughnuts i made they were really good. I filled them with different kinds of jams and chocolate, one of the jams i filled the doughnuts with was raspberry jam that i made from my own raspberries from the garden i kept in the freezer.
I hope you guys tried them or will try them they were great! :drool

:frow Oooooh Greenthumb!!

Those look so good...Mmmmm.....and filled with home-made raspberry jam... I can almost taste them!

We celebrate the day as both Shrove Tuesday & as Pancake Day. Scroll down a bit for info on it.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/christianity/holydays/lent_1.shtml#h2

The pancakes/crepes are usually served with just lemon juice & a little sugar. Most people make them -- the supermarkets remind everyone a couple of weeks ahead of the day!

Pancake Races are very popular on the day. Not far from me they have one of the oldest.

We did not do anything special this year, other than my wife wearing Mardi Gras beads to church last Sunday. She probably would not have done that if most of her Sunday School class and the minister had not told her the Saints did not have a chance against Minnesota and certainly could not handle the favored Colts. We raised our kids in the New Orleans suburbs and it's just not the same up here.

Speaking of New Orleans, you see a lot of stuff on TV and think Mardi Gras in New Orleans is an adults only affair. Not even close to true. There are certainly adults only areas but good parents know you do not take your kids to the French Quarter on any Friday or Saturday night throughout the year or any time during Mardi Gras. But there are lots of parades and events that are absolutely suited to young kids throughout southeast Louisiana, including the immediate New Orleans area. The French Quarter deserves its reputation but there is a lot more to New Orleans than the French Quarter.

Your beingets look beautiful. As for celebrating Mari Gras we been doing that for the last 6 weeks. I didn't get to NewOrleans yesterday because my kids were reallly sic and it is quite cold. I won't be giving anything up. Not Catholic but will certinly enjoy the push for seafood in the market.
