Here's a bit more info on pruning (a US site this time). :D

http://figs4fun.com/basics_Pruning.html ***This large site is only about FIGS......!! :bow

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! :p I have just discovered, thanks to this page & a magnifying glass, that I look to have potential figs -- tiny weeny things. I am going to have to cosset my two trees all through the winter. I shall give the whole bed a really good mulch of good compost. I am totally thrilled! Having planted one over the grave of my dear departed Andalusian roo seems to have done the trick, helped by the torrential rains of the last month. :celebrate

thanks for all this info and I am going to get myself one of those panachee figs OMG they are stunning I have to consider potting this tree in a big pot on wheels and being able to move it back and forth into my make shift green house but it is all good :)

everything garden requires some strategy :)

I hope you can grow the Panachee with one tree only? do you need a second one? will my other figs interfear with the penache staying true? so many figgy questions!

the pruning page really helped I am printing it off

thanks again

my figs are so close to perfect now and if we get about four more weeks of sun I may get part of that second crop to ripen (but will not hold my breath!)

also there is a neglected fig tree on some public property near my house that no one touches so I am going to wander down later this week with a bag and see what I can score of that one!

The Panachee Fig is self fertile but doesn't have a 2nd crop (figs divide into different types -- those who do & those who don't have two crops). I have ordered a Panachee -- it should arrive mid Autumn. I have worked oou where to plant it where it has plenty of room to grow as it can reach quite a size. I shall have to move some roses but that is fine because it is too hot for them there & their flowers get frizzled round the edges so it should be the perfect place for the spectacular fig -- it is right by my front door as an added bonus.

Sounds great Hattie!! Yep figs like it hot and sunny. What size did you order? Maybe it will produce in a year or two.

I know this thread is about pruning but I have to admit

My tummy hurts from all the figs I have been eating :p

they are bursting right now ..I have to make some jam while they are at their best maybe Thursday!

I understand the pruning now I think and will do what needs to be done I have always been a manic pruner and over done for years ..

now that I am older I have an appreciation for patience and moving slow in life..

so I think I will do a better job of it thanks to the great info!

I hope someone I spam with that panachee fig (namely the husband) will "surprise" me with my own tree :) it is so beautiful!

my tree gets what looks like it could be three crops is that possible?

the first big fat one ..the second almost ripens but then it gets cold right before ..and the third ..well it stays tiny tiny
