We got our first tomnato today!!!! It was a beautiful Sungold cherry tomato and it was delicious!!! I noticed a big tomato turning, also, so maybe we will have a slicer in a day or two. After all this waiting, these things better be good! Haha This is so exciting.

I've got lots of tomatoes....they are just all still green!! I had two starting to get red, and both had blossom end rot. We had a terrible hot spell, with no rain- so they were awful stressed. We have had half a dozen cherries- but my goodness, I am ready for a slicer!! I am so ready for some basil, tomatoes, and feta! Enjoy your harvest, Skeeter!

Just like lesa, I have lots of green tomatoes but no red ones. Even my old faithful black krim tomato plants are letting me down this year. Yesterday morning I bought 3# of heirloom Mortgage Lifter tomatoes at our farmer's market from a lady friend. We ate one at supper last evening and they are tasteless. This is my worst year ever for tomatoes. I have not seen one drop of rain in over 6 weeks and temps in the high 90s almost every day. There have been some showers all around us but not on us.

I really HAVE to get a few nice tomatoes from each of my heirloom tomato plants to have seeds to sell and to use next year. But, on the other hand, September is usually a great month for tomatoes around here.

I'm afraid I'm still harvesting from fruit set before the plants ever went out into the garden :/.

It is only now that we have some real warm nights that should allow more of the flowers to do what they are supposed to do. By real warm, I mean that the thermometer stays above 55F.

The plants are small because of the cool growing conditions and, probably, because I left tiny fruit and flowers on them at transplanting. But anyway, Sungold was again the earliest in my garden as well, Skeeter!!

I think the Japanese plant breeders really had some magic on their side with that variety. I know that there are a lot of people that consider Sungold, cloyingly sweet. I'm just happy with them :). And, I'm happy with their competition from SunSugar, another Japanese variety. It makes me wonder what Momotaro is like. At 74 days, I think mid-sized Momotaro should be okay in my garden.

I was going to suggest those too Chris, or even Siberian that's another that came to mind. I'm going to try one or two of those next year would be nice to get some late maters that don't have to ripen indoors. Ive got a TON of green tomatoes out in my garden. I've collected a few Early Girls, and a couple of Romas just waiting on the rest to turn.

Don't mean to brag..but..I've already harvested lots of sungold, early girls, 1 siletz, 1 thessalonka (something like that?), and 1 black krim. My Black japanese triefili is almost ready also.

I will definitely grow the siletz again. It was the most beautiful perfect red shaped tomatoes that I've ever seen. Just like the ones Jackb showed us here. I love the flavor, in fact I love the flavor of ALL my tomatoes!

There you go, Mary!

Of the ones Chris has suggested, I've only grown Stupice. It had a problem with "appearance" - unlike Mary's Siletz.

Appearance was NOT very important to me and I thought it had good flavor but DW took to calling them "my Stupid Tomato." This hurt my feelings especially since I'd invested so much effort in learning (& practicing) how to say "Stupice" around her . . .

I have a name problem with "Siberian" also. Reminds me of the "Sub-arctics" I used to have to grow in another location. I was happy to move from that higher altitude garden partly because of the trouble I had growing tomatoes and sweet corn.

It is "Thessaloniki," Mary. It is a very good heirloom choice for dry, hot summers. And, I've had it in my garden for about 6 or 7 years. I'm interested in learning how it does for you in the Bay Area. Skeeter might think about Thessaloniki in her location.

I have 1 Big Beef but it was a tiny thing (Tiny Beef ;)). Still, it beat the Early Girls. In their defense, the EG were 8-week-olds when set out rather than the 12-week-olds that were everything else, just about.

Here is half of what was harvested Friday. Just ignore the doughnut peaches, I just put them in for size comparison :p:

Believe it or not, that pathetic, blemished, split, slightly-bigger-than-a-cherry tomato is a Big Beef! I think I got the 1st Sungold on the 7th but this is the way it has been for 3 weeks now, little dribs and drabs of tomatoes a couple times a week.

My big find this year are the Sweet Quartz! Those "red" tomatoes aren't really red, they are pink Sweet Quartz. This is another Japanese cherry and it is oh-so-sweet! Now if they don't come up with a decent name for this little wonder, English-speakers won't try them and the Japanese seed companies will stop sending seed here :/! Honestly, horticulture needs English majors!
