We have gas furnaces also, but build a fire to satisfy the thermostat.
It's not for everyone and not everyone deals with the same weather conditions. Liquid and gas fuel produce a moist heat. Wood heat draws off condensation heating much as does sunlight.
In Cal. there are many new laws covering wood fireplaces. Also no burn days reported by the llocal TV station weather people, so one may have a half dozen days a year where one can actually burn with a real wood fireplace ( smog, forest fires, etc.). Then the State has the wood burning firepace cops who tour the neighborhoods and issues you tickets that get quite expensive.
