I am sure that my 5yo and 6yo Montmorency Cherry Trees were ready for harvest in 2012, but we were in the beginning of a drought and the birds got 'em all. THIS year my 5yo tree still has maturing fruit, and the 6yo tree has just started. I've made one pie and put up 6 1/4 quarts each ready for one pie this winter!!!

Lucky you! I can't wait to eat a cherry off my own tree... I didn't have any last year. Had a few blossoms this year, but the late frost got them. So, no cherries or plums. However, I do have a few peaches and tons of apples. Enjoy your yummy cherries!

Is 5 or 6 years the typical age for cherry trees to bear? That's discouraging for a senior citizen who is thinking about planting some......

Hey Bay you need to come up to the Great Lake State a.k.a "The Mitten" and celebrate at The Cherry Festival Its a blast. That region is known for its cherry production. Great local wineries on Leelanau peninsula too. 25 wineries on a beautiful lake shoreline. Visit Sleeping Bear Sand dunes, casino, its an absolutely stunning part of the state.

When I planted my cherry tree- I got two. One had very little root system, and died. Now I am wondering do I need two trees, for fruit?

I have a very prolific sour cherry trees, but can't seem to make the big black cherries to live, my latest one is dying as we speak, and it has had an awesome year.

I understand that two cherry trees help with pollination. Mine are ~ 15 ft. apart. Sour pie cherry trees do very well, but black, sweet cherry trees don't do well in our zone. Someone asked about this recently on Mid American Gardener and their blossoms dried up--no fruit this year. However, their sour cherry tree produced.
You might also have a problem with birds getting them all. Just tie throwaway CD's on them to scare the birds from eating your fruit. Oldy but goody solution.
