Id look at Yellow Dolls too if you want to grow watermelons in a shorter season. Taste is good, and supposedly grow faster than Sugar Babies. Anybody who had watermelon at the Farmers Markets here said they switched because the Yellow Dolls after having a poor harvest on Sugar Babies. They said they got plenty of watermelons, just couldn't get them to ripen in time. And Im in Zone 5
Jared, I have shown catalog pictures of yellow watermelon to DW for about 3 years. The response has always been, "That doesn't look like a watermelon!" "But, don't they look good?" "Not to me!"
This year, she decided to get a yellow watermelon at the farmers' market and try it. I had a slice, too. It was very tasty and I think made a believer out of DW. I should be able to sneak a few seeds in!
Since melons take up quite a bit of room and are usually anticipated with real interest by most everyone, failure can be very disappointing. Yellow Doll certainly has a claim for being early. I'm willing to give her a try !
@ Steve. My wife did the same thing except she didn't realize the "personal watermelons" at the Farmers market were yellow dolls when she bought one this summer. I wasn't there when she bought it, but I was when she cut into it. She wasn't thrilled till she tried it now is a big believer in them. I haven't grown them yet but I'm pretty sure they'll make the list for next year.
