We leave our lawn clippings on the lawn. Best way to get organic matter back into your lawn soil. IMO.

Edited to say: We don't have to mow our lawn as often as our friends in other climates do. Thus our mow it and let it sink in method. I am sure it is very different when you have to mow your lawn often. :D
Leaving the clippings on the lawn no matter where you live and how often you have to mow is a good idea. The trick is to never tale off more than a third of the blade at each mowing. Cutting more than a third of the blade stresses and stunts the roots. The clippings supply nutrients like you said, and encourage lots of earthworms and other macro and micro organisms.

Sorry...I get a little lawn nerdy sometimes. :p

I have a bagger on my mower, but sometimes I just pull them by the cage and throw them in, too. Bear in mind, like I've discovered on the Horse Forum, there are people convinced that you will poison your horse (or chickens) if the grass runs through the mower, with the oil and gas fumes.
I love to layer it on, then come along in about 3 months with a spade and roll it up for compost. The grass keeps the chicken manure from getting to the soil, so you get the whole package to use in the garden.

Gaaahhhh! FREE chicken food has come to an end for me. I went into the store last night all excited to get some corn husks. Asked the produce kid. He went out back and asked someone, then came back to tell me, "sorry, we can't give them out anymore because someone got caught steeling. One person ruins it for everyone else." Bummer!

Oh, so sorry bj. :( That is just beyond wrong!!

They were giving away the corn husks, so someone could not have really stolen them. I didn't stop to ask, I just accepted the answer and moved on. But I am guessing that someone asked to have them and then put something else in the middle of the bag of corn husks and walked out or tried to. :(

I used to be in Loss Prevention (catching shoplifters) for many years, so nothing would surprise me really. Just takes one knucklehead to ruin it for everyone.

Wellp, back to the drawing board. Know what happens if you let two mustard plants or two turnip plants go to seed? Ya get 2 bazillion seeds. Know what happens if ya plant a thousand seeds from those in a good 4 x 12 spot? Ya get a thousand little plants full of vitamins that you can feed chickens with. Same with lots of things that go to seed and make a bazillion seeds per plant.
