My organic gardening magazine actually had a little article asking the same question this month. It says it really doesn't matter, but what does matter is to plant tall things/short things according to where the sun will be so your tall things don't shade the shorter ones too much. (Unless you live somewhere where the sun is really intense like I do, and you NEED to shade your little plants!)
