I've never tasted real huckleberries, even when I lived in the Northwest. Wisconsin is supposedly within the range of one species; but my area of the state has high pH soil, and they prefer the more acidic soil of the Northern & Western parts of the state. Wild blackberries & blueberries prefer the same soil conditions, so none of them will grow on my property, which has a pH of just below 8. I grew up picking wild blackberries on my Grandfather's land, and DW & our children picked a lot of them when we lived on the Pacific coast. Wild blackberries are so much sweeter than the large but sour commercial blackberries, I really miss them & wish I could get them to grow here.
