@AMKuska, have you ever thought about raising mealworms for your chickens? It's really quite easy and low maintenance. (depending on how fastidious you are)
And the chickens just go bananas over them.

I have raised mealworms for fishing and don't remember a bad smell.

This is an idea for concentrating usable protein. Another is raising redworms. It seems to have some problems. My understanding is that both meal and red are most prolific when fed the equivalent of chicken feed ...

I wonder if you might be thinking of soldier fly larvae, @AMKuska . I'm not going there, nope.

Well, I heard the smell is terrible from my neighbor across the street who tried raising them himself. Perhaps he was doing it wrong?
