I'm always finding great quotes about gardens and the thought occured that it might be nice to have a place to post a quote when it appeals to you. I'm sure the rest of us would appreciate it also. Here's the one that gave me the idea:

"The butterfly is a flying flower. The flower a tethered butterfly" - Ecouchard Le Brun

"God made dirt, so dirt don't hurt!"

I have no idea where it came from, but my grandmother said it all the time when we were in the garden about everything! It was ok to be dirty at her house, we could eat anything in the garden without washing it because she didn't spray anything... and no one cared if any of us played with worms.

I've caught myself saying it to my own daughter and husband quite often! ;)

The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,--
One is nearer God's heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.

Stevie, that quote . . . well, I've been robbed of all reason for the last 24 hours just thinking about it.

The trouble with gardening is that it does not remain an avocation. It becomes an obsession. ~ Phyllis McGinley

I love these.

"God made rainy days so gardeners could get the housework done."

"Gardens are a form of autobiography."
Sydney Eddison, Horticulture magazine, August/September 1993

"If we throw mother nature out the window, she comes back in the door with a pitchfork."
Masanobu Fukuoka

"There is no gardening without humility. Nature is constantly sending even its oldest scholars to the bottom of the class for some egregious blunder."
Alfred Austin

I like these:

or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses. Abraham Lincoln

The most noteworthy thing about gardeners is that they are always optimistic, always enterprising, and never satisfied.
They always look forward to doing something better than they have ever done before. Vita Sackville-West
