Yes, you understood it correctly.

It is rather on the brutal side, but as you say, the return is large, and you don't buy it again.

Why don't you buy it again? Is it something that comes back like rhubarb every year or is that assuming that you use a couple of your heads as seed for the next year?

Say you buy a pound of seed garlic, plant each clove and end up with 45 - 65 heads of garlic. If you were to save some of the heads for replanting, you'd only need the equivalent of 5 - 6 of those heads to replace what you needed to get the same amount again for the next season and can eat the rest. Thus, this year's harvest is next year's seeds.

But, you plant only the biggest of the cloves because they'll have the most energy to grow you the biggest heads the next season, so in actuality, you may have to dig in to more than 5 - 6 heads to get what you need for the next harvest.

But yes, that's the idea.

You assume that you will replant part of your harvest by keeping some of the heads to plant again the next season. Especially if you want to get out from under buying it at the high price it commands.

It's like growing corn. You refrain from eating it all, and save some to grow the next year.
