Greetings, The pipe can be extended [welded] I would bury 4' in concrete. Weld 2' sections of rebar across the pipe to be buried every 10" in opposite directions. The concrete pad can be 3' wide, unless you know your soil or mineral earth would require wider when wet, and extend 6" below the bottom of the pipe.

Very nice gates!

Richard

4" X 1/4" square tubing will look better.

Best guess is yes. Will need top brace to make it stronger. Other option would be make a 6" X 6" frame, pour concrete with larger base. Under ground, pour concrete pad. Your largest problem will be the two sides will lean towards center-why the brace. Can set heavy L hooks in cement to sit the gate hinges on.

The cement sides would be in H with lower part below ground.

On using the metal poles, more I think about it, I'd do in old fashioned A that looks like a H. With the middle under ground. Tie the middle brace with T joints. Bottom could use T joints and screw on 2-3' pipes that will stop it from leaning inside or out. Middle and top braces will keep them seperated.

Please forgive my saying.
6oolb of gates hung on pipe in 4" of concrete, is not a good idea. These are industrial dimensions, there is so much leverage on the top of that gate, can you imagine a pipe wrench that long on a piece of pipe in that little concrete how much force it would take to pop the concrete? It would be a good idea to do this right the first time, the only time.

Hanging 300lb metal gates on wood post is temporary.

When people are going to walk over, under, around or through items of great weight or great height the question is how safe/strong, not what is good enough.

It was once my occupation to send the crews out to do this sort of job.

Excuse my coming up with this. I won't butt in again, without being asked.

The very best of luck, those are a great set of gates, I'll love to see them when you have them in place.

4"? Did you mean 4'? Agree, if only 4" deep, will topple before you get them placed in position.

Seedcorn, I just read your description of a frame with an H of pipe embedded in concrete I think that is a very good way of doing it.
I think you mean to have nipples extending out in two directions on each post, That would by tying them together form a frame.
That I think would work great.
I'm sorry I didn't read your whole post earlier.

I like square tube.

Understand emergencies happen. He doesn't have a cell phone to set up another time and explain. His work is probably worse than his service.
