Georgia St. Community Garden- Detroit, MI

Hi all,

As you can see I am new here but I wanted to tell everyone about my garden.

Well the idea of the Georgia St. Community Garden started in March 2008 when I stood outside and saw all the trash that people had thrown on the curbside and in three city lots over the winter. I started cleaning them on April 8 and decided it would be a great place for a garden. It has turned into six lots, two of which will be a fruit orchard. It literally turned into a community center. I started "Reading and Movie Nights" on Saturdays. Friends from the suburbs come to the city and read to the kids in the neighborhood. I just secured an annex of a church up the street from the garden to do tutoring and continue reading night over the winter. I go to probate court next month to get a building across the street from the garden to have a permanent community center. I am a member of the Greening of Detroits - Garden Resource Program Collaborative.

Cub - That's AWESOME!!! I think that community gardens are such an asset in so many ways and it's great to see what you're doing there in Detroit. How many folks do you have involved so far? Have you seen any change in the community yet? I look forward to seeing your updates!

I haven't updated in a while, but we're about to start our winter garden. The Spring/Summer season was such a success, with a lot of produce going to the homeless shelter. Being able to provide fresh fruit and veggies is such a nice change from the usual canned stuff.

I really agree -one person can do SO MUCH good. Thanks for doing your part!

Sorry for the delayed response. I have been pretty busy with a building cleanup, getting a 501(c)3 designation, forming a board and bylaws, getting a website built and making a logo for our organization.

We are having a craft day for the kids and our first annual neighborhood holiday dinner.
I have around 12 kids that help in the garden and about 4 adults.
The garden has changed our neighborhood. Neighbors are more neighborly like it was when I was a kid and our streets are cleaner.

Our new name is going to be Georgia St. Community Collective. My vision is growing and changing. We plan to buy and rehab houses and commercial properties in our area and provide computer training and tutoring. And of course feeding the hungry.
