Good Morning,

I bought some ginger a couple of weeks ago from W**mart and ended up not using it as planned. I decided I would try to dehydrate and put it up, but never was able to get out to buy the dehydrator LOL.

Now, I have ginger in that flimsy plastic bag that you put your fruit and veggies in at the store - on my island and it's sprouting.

Any idea how to plant it and get it to grow?

It's real easy to grow, although harder to overwinter unless you're in a frost-free climate or have room for a big pot indoors. (But you can just harvest it at the end of the summer and eat whatever amount you've got :p)

It likes well-drained but reasonably moist soil, and warmth, and sun but not hot harsh all-day full sun (unless moisture and soil conditions are *just* right for it)

I've never grown it in the ground -- when I lived in the carolinas, it was on total clay, and everywhere else I've lived has had too short a summer for me to bother -- but as a potted plant I can tell you it does real well in regular soilless potting mix, or a mixture of that plus sand.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I planted some that had sprouted in a pot last year and it grew nice long green leaves. The stems at the soil level were quite touchy and got damaged when I transplanted it. Then my son was carrying the pot in and I hadn't staked the plant and it bent over in the breeze. Long story short, I don't have a ginger plant anymore - it died. BUT I will grow one again because the leaves smelled nice and gingery. I would plant it originally in a large pot so I wouldn't have to transplant it so soon plus a would support the plant so the leaves don't bend over and break.

Ginger has some requirements that at first seem contradictory. It likes good light but no direct sun. It also likes warm humid air although it can get by without the humidity if it has to. Don't plant it where the ground stays soggy. The roots rot under those conditions.
