The biotech companies ( Monsanto et al) get sneakier every day. Instead of using their influence to try to pass a law that would probably get the public up in arms they try to sneak this through as a rider on the appropriations bill. "Give us what we want or no money for your agency." In effect it removes all control over GMO crops and allows them to do whatever they want to. Even if a judge halts planting of a new GMO product they can go ahead and plant it anyway. It gives them total immunity from the law. In effect, if this passes they will own the food industry.

I just sent in my protest to my representative, and sent the article to my siblings and kids, asking them to do the same. This is just such an inane and unnecessary law Monsanto is trying to inact; just the kind of thing that gets passed and has horrendous consequences down the road.

I posted this on facebook as soon as I saw it. Fairly predictable; nobody read it. Don't worry everybody, everything's OK, just go back to sleep.

Hopefully someone in the House will see it for what it is. Wouldn't it still have to pass the Senate and get the President's signature? I hope all you who read this will act on it.

If u find link to actual rider, I would like to read it. Even if approved, it can't enter grain market until European and Asian unions OK it

From the article:
"You can read the rider for yourself, which begins on page 86, Sec. 733 of the following document:
http://appropriations.house.gov -> http://appropriations.house.gov/uploadedfiles/bills-112hr-fc-ap-fy13-agriculture.pdf "

It says

"SEC. 733. In the event that a determination of non-
14 regulated status made pursuant to section 411 of the
15 Plant Protection Act is or has been invalidated or vacated,
16 the Secretary of Agriculture shall, notwithstanding any
17 other provision of law, upon request by a farmer, grower,
18 farm operator, or producer, immediately grant temporary
19 permit(s) or temporary deregulation in part, subject to
20 necessary and appropriate conditions consistent with sec-
21 tion 411(a) or 412(c) of the Plant Protection Act, which
22 interim conditions shall authorize the movement, introduc-
23 tion, continued cultivation, commercialization and other
24 specifically enumerated activities and requirements, in-
25 cluding measures designed to mitigate or minimize poten-
tial adverse environmental effects, if any, relevant to the
2 Secretarys evaluation of the petition for non-regulated
3 status, while ensuring that growers or other users are able
4 to move, plant, cultivate, introduce into commerce and
5 carry out other authorized activities in a timely manner:
6 Provided, That all such conditions shall be applicable only
7 for the interim period necessary for the Secretary to com-
8 plete any required analyses or consultations related to the
9 petition for non-regulated status: Provided further, That
10 nothing in this section shall be construed as limiting the
11 Secretary s authority under section 411, 412 and 414 of
12 the Plant Protection Act."

Not sure how much good it will do, but I signed this petition, # 198732

Subject: Stop the Monsanto Riders

Hi,

So-called 'Monsanto riders,' quietly slipped into the multi-billion dollar FY 2013 Agricultural Appropriations bill, would require - not just allow, but require - the Secretary of Agriculture to grant a temporary permit for the planting or cultivation of a genetically engineered crop, even if a federal court has ordered the planting be halted until an Environmental Impact Statement is completed. All the farmer or the biotech producer has to do is ask.

That's why I signed a petition to The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama, which says:

"Stop the Monsanto riders. Unless a citizen's army of farmers and consumers can stop them, Congress is likely to ram these dangerous riders through any day now."

Thanks!
