I wonder if celeriac would be a safer choice than celery.
It has been many years since I've tried to grow celery. The celeriac (celery root) has been in my garden for about a half dozen years. The only problem I've had with it is getting it too far into my "shady corner" and the roots not growing much past tennis ball size. It is happier in the full sun. Usually, I've grown Diamante but had Brilliant (which did brilliantly) last year. I will start Brilliant and Mars seed very soon, indoors.
Yes, celery root likes water. It may split in the heat but it is much less inclined to split than kohlrabi, by comparison. The condition of the stalks don't make me much inclined to use them, altho' they and the leaves would be just fine for flavoring. I really don't have much trouble with it and the roots go very, very nicely with potatoes and can be grated in a salad.
I think I am going to try celeriac next year, but this year I already have the seed. It is warming up tomorrow and I am moving all my cabbage, lettuce and onion outside to finish hardening. Then I am starting my celery and other stuff. I just need more room.
