The Weather Service keeps track of accumulated warmth during the growing season. It is mostly for farming purposes. Usually, it is done at their major weather stations. So . . . San Francisco, by October 15th, has a norm of 2284 Growing Degree Days. Spokane (my nearest weather station), by October 15th, has a norm of 2295 Growing Degree Days. With a much longer growing season in San Francisco, the 2 communities have virtually the same accumulated warmth by that date.
