Grafted Tomato plants, Really!

If anyone has recently looked over a few 2013 Vegetable Garden catalogs, Has anyone noticed something different in tomatoes listed for first time?
Grafted Tomato plants, This isn't anything new, grafted plants are common in Europe and Asia and are just now starting to reach the mainstream here in the U.S. I read the catalog's description and I'm convinced.
I must say grafted plants looks quite promising, better yields, better disease resistance, and longer harvesting than tomatoes normally started as seed. I never knew tomatoes could be grafted I thought just fruit trees were grafted. This sounds very interesting and will make next year exciting with this innovation.
I definitely want to plant some of these for next year, especially having a bad year for tomatoes myself. I bet these will sell out fast, its not a bad idea to order a few plants early.
I think grafted plants hold a lot of potential.

Hi Greenthumb!

Grafted tomatoes were sold here this for the first time and they were very popular. I was told by several retailers that the trick to them is NOT plant them deep. Meaning do not plant the graft below ground.

I was also told to expect to see grafted pepper plants for 2013. We did not plant any grafted tomatoes this year but I may give one or two a chance for 2013, I heard of many success stories from customers and out here in the wacky weather of the west, we need all the help we can get.

Oh yes Grafted Tomatoes are real, I've seen them offered in Totally Tomatoes, Vermont Bean Company and Gurneys. I'm sure there are more companies that will have these available for next year.

Tomato seeds are probably the easiest of most to grow. Why would one even think of grafting? Sort of reminds me of the upsidedown planter craze.

They graft a great tomato onto the best root stock. I think it would actually be pretty easy to do at home. tomatoes heal so well you could rig something up to keep the wounds together. The seeds are so cheap you could graft a lot hoping to get a few to make it. A straw contraption comes to mind. I like doing weird challenging things. There may come a day when I will try it.

A total of 513 pounds of tomatoes was picked from about 32 plants over the season.Average 16 pounds per plant. There are probably another 100 or so pounds remaining if the weather holds with no frost.This is my best year ever for tomatoes.

Forty one pounds of tomatoes were picked today from the main tomato patch consisting of 32 plants suspended by ropes, free growing.Fifteen pounds were processed into juice and the remainder was spread amongst neighbours.Total tomatoes from the garden so far this year is 121 pounds.Types are: Bonny Best(5), Celebrity(5), Big Beef(5), Better Boy(5), Black Krim(Purple fruit)(10), and Lemon Boy (2).

How's that work? Is it similar to a hybrid? I'm not familiar with grafting.
