I have four types of grapes growing over an arbor I built on my front porch. They are growing pretty well but some disease is trying to overtake them and kill them! I don't know what it is or how to treat it. I prefer natural solutions.

Here are some pix I took this morning:

Thanks in advance for any help and advice!

They actually look to have been attacked by Japanese beetles! The red on the edges look more like sun scorch... did you spray them down with water or any time of bug/fungal treatment during a hot afternoon?

Actually no we haven't sprayed anything on them yet. We did have Japanese beetles attack our fruit trees and hubby grabbed what he THOUGHT was fruit tree spray and sprayed our plum and apple tree and almost killed them! The leaves turned brown and dried out and fell off but thank God, not all the leaves were killed and the trees now have new growth.

I say all that to say I know hot it looks when leaves are sprayed with stuff like that. I think the grape leaves ARE being eaten by some kind of bugs, but I've never seen any Japanese beetles on them and I see the grape vines several times a day.

I have pruned them back a bit and removed as much of the dead leaves as I can, but being the dead of summer I can't prune much without killing it. Of course, I still have to find out what 'it' is that's hurting them!

The Japanese Beetles love my grape vines! Check them in the evening-just before dark. I rarely see them on mine in the light of day... Good luck!

I'll take a look tomorrow but I don't even see the Japanese beetles on my fruit trees any more and haven't for over a month. I hope it IS a bug thing because I think that would be easier to 'cure' than some disease. Do you do anything to stop them from eating your grape vines?

I haven't seen any of the beetles on mine either, then hubby put out a beetle trap by the chicken coops to lure them away from the vine. The bag was full in like 2 days with beetles! :barnie

Here's something else it could possible be, but it is hard to tell from the angles of the photos, and will all the bug damage.

Problem: Downy Mildew
Affected Area: Leaf

Description: The fungus attacks all green parts of the vine, particularly the leaves. Lesions develop on the leaves that are yellowish to reddish brown, oily, angular, and limited by the veins. Infected shoot tips thicken, curl, and become white when infested with spores and eventually turn brown and die. Similar symptoms are seen on petioles, tendrils, and young inflorescences, which, if attacked early enough, ultimately turn brown, dry up, and drop. The young berries are highly susceptible, appearing grayish when infected and covered with a downy felt of fungus sporulation.

Control: Fungicides are the most important control measure on susceptible cultivars grown in regions with high disease pressure.

I just want to say, I would rather battle a bug any day then a disease. ANd I blame the disease issue on so many companies out their making dusts, treatments and sprays they convince people to use even when not needed. It has become so bad that diseases are becoming immune to the treatments. Its also happening with bugs and weeds as well.

I totally agree! I go NATURAL on everything in my garden, in my house and in ME whenever possible!

I really hope that you can get it under control whatever it is. I've had a lot of mildew issues i the garden, and instead of fungicides I've been doing neem oil. That has seemed to help a lot on the fruit trees, my roses and grape vines.

Me too! The trick is to find something natural that will kill the fungus or whatever and not harm the plant! The grapes seem to still be growing, esp. on the tops, but I don't want them to be overtaken and killed either. Many of the leaves aren't eaten on, just got brown, shriveled up and died.
