Do green beans flower or do they go straight to a bean? I thought they flower myself but I seem to have gone straight to little beans.

They flower first, at least mine always have. If you have beans growing you should have some flowers too. What type of bean are you growing?

They definitely flower first.

As far as the type of green beans you are growing, that becomes important mainly if they are bush beans or pole beans. Bush beans do not require staking. They'll grow maybe two feet high and in a bush form.

The pole beans, however, have a vining habit. They need something to climb on. Just like anything else, there are many different ways to accomplish this. You can use about any version you would use to support tomatoes. Or you can just push a stick in the ground and they'll climb that. Of course, the wind might blow that over if it is not in good. Mine are not quite ready to stake yet, but I plan on using three tree branches to make a teepee about 5 feet high for mine. Our ice storm in January made plenty of branches available.

The plants send out tendrils that will wrap around things, somewhat like grape vines, so you don't have to tie them up once they get started. Depending on your support method, you may need to help them start climbing. I usually accomplish this by hanging a string down to the plant and gently wrapping the first tendrils around the string. This may seem confusing at first but after you see it, it becomes obvious.

We can and freeze a lot of green beans as well as eating them fresh. Once we are finished with them, I let them go to seed and use the beans as dried beans. They make a great soup.

Good luck

Maybe what I am thinking is going to be a bean is really going to be a flower. This is my first year gardening. I dont even know what the green bean is going to look like growing on the vine.

If you see the beans, you simply missed the flower, but it was there. Flower was on the far end of the bean. Sometimes you can see a dried one there.

Okra grows much the same way and has a gorgeous large flower... which lasts one day. It gets pollinated and makes an okra, or it dies. Could well be the flower on beans only lasts one day; never noticed.

Like a grocery store green bean, hanging straight up and down. Easy to mistake for a stem.

It's such fun seeing what these things look like on their plants. Have fun!
