Texan,

This is sort of my first year too. Grown some odds and ends in the past but my first larger scale effort. Anyway, beans definitely flower. Flowers don't last long and then you will see little bean pods coming on.

I planted Blue Lakes but its a bush variety. I have been getting beans out the wazoo for several weeks now. We can't eat them all. I have been freezing a lot of them. So get ready, once they start coming on they go crazy.

I am gonna have to try those bush varieties myself. I want to do purple hull peas next year as well. Which side of town are you at anyways? I am in between Humble and Houston out by the lake.

I'm in Twin Cities, 4b.

Slowly but surely, I'm getting my garden in; but, the drought and sandy soil sure isn't helping. Plus, they are predicting 54 degrees on Saturday and then a few days in the 60's. This cool weather is nice for 'us' but NOT our garden plants that we're trying to grow!

So far, I've planted 28 various tomatoes; 15 ft. row of potatoes (my first try;) 8 multi-colored sweet peppers; 3 yellow squash; 12 cucumbers; big patch of yellow onions; 28 broccoli plants; and today, I planted 34 pole beans -- string beans in green, yellow, and purple.

I've STILL got to plant the Swiss chard, bok choi, carrots, herbs & flowers IN the garden, pumpkins, cantaloupe, and a H U G E area of corn!!!!

Because of this garbage sand which we've got for 'soil' here, I always have to use a LOT of either my own compost or store-bought compost for every hole or trench I dig to plant!

I'm not far from you. I'm in Kingwood.

I am actually going to try climbers (pole beans) next. My Bush Beans are thriving but I have to practically get on my belly and crawl around in there to get the beans. I would prefer something I can pick from a standing position.

I have some purple hulls going. No peas yet. I'm just now seeing some flowers on them. I think these must come later in the summer. They were real hard to get germinated until almost May because they need soil above 70 degrees. Also I had an infestation of flea beetles. Been working them with citrus and almost have them conquered.

You could probably still plant some purple hulls this year if you wanted and they would do fine. Last year I planted some in August and was eating peas by October.
