3 last ditch tomato plants insisted on me leaving them, they were COVERED in fruits since last month. Nothing seemed to be ripening though? I waited... and I waited... still no ripening! So I decide today after I notice tons of new blooms, its time to remove the green ones... either they ripen or they won't!

So into a cardboard box, and I wrap in several sheets of tissue paper. Now they will sit in my pantry for a few days to finish off the few that started and maybe get the rest to ripen too.

If not, I need a green tomato chutney recipe asap! :)

I just made a green tomato sweet relish. It takes 3 days total. I'll post the recipe if they are good...

vfem - I seem to remember someone telling me, if you put a banana in with them they will ripen. Not tired it yet so don't know if it works.

I was just told by a long-time gardener that he puts an over-ripe tomato in with the green ones.

He says he is amazed at how quickly they ripen that way. In just a short while, he takes the over-ripe tomato out and tosses it. The others are ready.

Don't know . . . haven't tried it. I just put those last-of-the-season tomatoes in a basket and go thru them on a daily basis - selecting out ripe tomatoes. They may ripen more quickly from having hot hands on them so often :p.

Hi vfem,
My green tomatoes are ripening well indoors with just a couple of ripe toms to keep them company. However here is a great chutney to make with any green ones you have over. ***Remember these are British measurements.....!! :D

This is off-topic but it is just something that gripes me no end.

The United States became an independent nation nearly 250 years ago! And yet, we still use systems of measurement from our colonial past!!

Hattie, you could have said "Remember these are 'non-Imperial' measurements."

The United States is stuck permanently in the past along with 2 other nations: Burma and Liberia! I suppose Burma is still reveling in some weird reactionary fashion in its colonial past, as well. Liberia, was more or less, an African colony of the US, founded as a home for former American slaves.

The entire world began converting to the International System of measurement during the 1800's and 1900's! Our near neighbor, Canada, converted in the 1970's, when, some of us in the USA, tried but failed! We are now reaching a point where the Canadians cannot "fathom" what we are talking about when we use Fahrenheit temperatures and 16 ounces equals a pint of beer! We are nutz!

There is all of this reactionary silliness in this country to cling desperately to things past and resist change! Think this might be working out for us? Think we are leading the way on any of this? Think that the world looks to the United States for leadership!? Hah! Yeah, you bet . . . the entire world left us behind 50 years ago and more!

Last night I made a pot roast of brisket of beef with green tomatoes, various veg & herbs. I cooked it very slowly for about 3 hours & it was just so tasty. I always add a lot of Balsamic Vinegar & Worcestershire Sauce to give it an extra 'special' taste. It is great cold in sandwiches too........ :drool
