Oh, I don't think there is anything wrong with buying sets. Have always done this. It is just cheaper and you have more of a selection of seeds. With the sets you have to take what the local nursery or feed store is providing and I wanted to start my own.
I even found a directions on e-how.com to grow your own sets.
1. Plant your seeds about 12 wks before your 1st frost.
2. About 1 week before the 1st frost, break down the tops.
3. About 1 week after the frost, gentle dig and dry your onions.
4. Store in a dry, dark, low humidity place over winter.
I am thinking about doing this if I can get the seeds to grow for me this year.
