Honestly, I've been wondering about potatoes. I really want to try making a hanging basket type thing and trying them out. My idea would be to have rings (made of sturdy wire, wood or maybe even rings cut from a 5g bucket), then sew a cloth sock and sew the rings in 12 inch increments. Sew/tie something to hang it with. Scrunch it up and hang it so that the rings are all together with only a small amount of the bottom hanging free. Start your potatoes and as your layers build, drop a ring and continue. It would be similar to building up your tires, but you'd be dropping it down instead. The weight may become an issue, so you'd have to make it very sturdy. It would keep voles out though, lol.
