Awesome melon, wife. It may be the variety I was trying to grow (georgia rattlesnake). I will try for smaller melons.

Vfem, what are you doing about your fall gardening if you still have watermelons in your garden. That is why I tried to prune the vines. My peppers will stay until the frost and my second season cukes are getting big. But I need to put in my collard green transplants, beets, etc for the fall harvest.

My front garden has been gutted from the zukes and squash, and that has leeks, chard, acron squash and butternut squash already going. I dug up around my chicken coops and planted additional cukes for pickling (the are just getting there first round of flowers). Also I have pumpkins there, and in a 6 ft bed. Well the 6 ft bed pumpkins died because of vine borers so I ripped those out. I am going to get some mesh netting to protect that bed any further from bugs.... then I'm going to plant cabbage.

My corn is done, but since the watermelon is there, I will leave it. My blackbeans are in another bed that will be done at the end of the month and I will put in additional carrots and cabbage there I think. Then when I pull my tomatoes, I will leave my peppers until I get my garlic and onions in for that last bed!!!

WOW... I can't believe I had to think that all through like that! SHEESH! Thanks for forcing me to make a plan. ;)

Either way my watermelons are almost to size, and then its just waiting for them to ripen.

Lucky you!! I lost my pumpkins this year, but I've had some good years, too. I'm pretty sure that all of the bugs that didn't die from the corn field behind, came over for dinner!!
I must admit that I haven't sprayed with ANYTHING, but this is a learning curve year for me, and I have other successes, so don't cry for me.
Before my one 15 footer died, I had started to train it. I've seen lots of "tents" and other structures people use to make them climb. I wonder if that would help? :D

I wish the watermelon would grow!!! it is to hot here and they keep getting burned by the sun and when I tried planting in the shade they still died from the heat!

I am going to try again in the late winter maybe I will get a few melons.
