First year with a garden. I have broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, turnips, fennel, and winter hardy peas in both containers and in the ground. I am in zone 9. Last night, our temps got to the high 20's and it will repeat tonight, then above freezing for the foreseeable future. We had a lot of rain yesterday, which cleared and it got cold.

I talked with an organic gardener this weekend, and he said my crops would survive the freeze without being covered. I don't really know if they did or not.

My fennel, broccoli and peas are lying down a bit. The cabbage is a bit saggy, as well. The sprouts seem infazed.

Any advice? What would you do tonight? Cover? Large fan to move the air about somewhat?

If I remember I would cover but that would assume I would remember to uncover tomarrow, which is hardly the case. So I would let it Ride!

Well, I didn't get them covered as I have been very sick. But everything survived! Right now we are having our coldest yet with a current temp of 26.

We got down to 22. The sun isn't up yet, so I can't check for damage. Kinda nervous....

So, what do I do now? Is this fodder for the compost pile? This was my very first attempt at gardening, so of course I am devastated. The broccoli was VERY slow to grow, but the sprouts, cabbage and lettuce (containers) did great. I should have taken the containers in. I think it's probably a total loss, but I really don't know what to expect. What usually happens?

Lettuce and cabbage, pulled turnips yesterday.

Front to back, lettuce, broccoli, brussels sprouts.

I would just leave it and hope it may grow. Stuff like the brussel sprouts are supposed to sweet up with a bit of frost. All is not lost!

I sure needed that encouragement, thank you ! We have one more night of hard freeze, and then it should level out for a month or so. Thank you again.
