Oh yeah we have lots of Black and Turkey Vultures around here and it could have been a pair but their flight didn't look like vultures.
That would be expected since vultures are usually seen gliding on thermals.

What about cranes? They have a pretty big wingspan and make a different sound.

Yes cranes would be a good bet, too. But I still can see those large bodies in my mind's eye and they did not look long and skinny like a crane or herron. Darn - I wish it hadn't been so late in the day so we could have seen them better.

We have Blue Herons in our river. They have a near 7 foot wingspan. They crash land into the water. What a sight! They often stop traffic with the sight.

Killing hawks is illegal everywhere in USA.

Redtails feast on my partridge Wyandotte bantams. I encourage crows as they harass redtails.

What about putting out some crow decoys? They are pretty cheap and they might discourage the hawks from hanging around. Move them every couple of days or 1x a week so long as its in sight of the coop it might help. I don't know if your rooster will tolerate crows but its a thought.

My motto is... keep the bb gun loaded and shoot any big crows that get near my girls. It probably won't kill em but will make em think twice. Since I can't tell the difference and don't know birds well... gonna assume all are crows...

That's my story and I'm sticking too it

My position exactly. When it's convenient I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other.
Hope your DNR has a better sense of humor than ours do. Ours wanted to arrest me for walking corn field.....I was dressed in company gear, driving company car, carrying clip board with notes. When asked who I was--within .8 mile of home-I smiled and said "checking my crop". All of sudden, he got mad and wanted to arrest me for pot. What I get for having wired sense of humor.
